Include the grading system and its edition when specifying a grit. A number alone may be ambiguous across different systems.
Look at the distribution
Abrasive grains occupy a distribution rather than one exact diameter. Oversize and fines can affect process consistency and finish.
Connect to the process
Use the target finish and removal rate to guide trials. Ask for the measurement method as well as the nominal size.
