Choosing an abrasive grain

Begin with the workpiece and the result.

Material and process

Identify the workpiece, its hardness and the process: grinding, cutting, blasting or polishing. These establish the candidate abrasive families.

Cutting behaviour

Consider the balance of toughness and grain fracture. The right balance depends on pressure, speed, bond and the desired removal rate.

Trial and agreement

Evaluate a sample in the actual process, then agree the specification and acceptance criteria for subsequent orders.
